A Forgotten Icon, A Novel That Wont Let Her Be Overlooked
Shes Got It opens in the blistering summer of 1905, New York, where Clara Bow is born into chaos: a family fractured by mental illness, addiction, and violence. Through prose as unflinching as it is lyrical, McFain traces Claras rise from a Brooklyn tenement to the silver screens of Hollywood, refusing to flinch from the brutal truths behind the glamour.
McFains Clara is no mythshes flesh, fury, fire. The novel captures every jagged edge of her childhood abuse, her brushes with madness and death, and her defiant drive to be seen, not just as a face on a movie poster, but as a person who mattered. From her harsh beginnings to the frenzy of fanfare that would both crown and consume her, McFain builds Claras world brick by aching brick.
For the Dreamers, the Damaged, and the Determined
While Shes Got It chronicles the early days of cinema, it pulses with urgency and modern relevance. McFain writes with a compassion that refuses pity and a toughness that refuses nostalgia. Claras voiceplucky, bruised, undefeatedechoes off every page. Whether shes scrapping on a Brooklyn street corner or standing under the studio lights in borrowed chiffon, Clara represents every young woman told to sit down, quiet down, and be grateful for crumbs.
She wasnt born for Hollywood, McFain says. Hollywood was born for herand then it tried to eat her alive.
In Shes Got It, readers find more than historical fiction. They find a firebrand heroine, a century-old reckoning with trauma, and a love letter to every underdog who ever dared to want more.
