Climate Deadline Alliance Urges Democratic Governors to Adopt Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint

The Climate Deadline Alliance is calling on Democratic governors and the U.S. Climate Alliance to adopt the Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint, a practical plan for removing carbon directly from the air, turning it into useful products, and protecting children from climate-driven harm expected to intensify in the 2030s.

How can reducing future emissions reduce the existing emissions, which are the cause of climate change? Answer, they cant! While COP30 offers hours of panels and promises, it still skirts the one step that would actually change the planets trajectory, removing the carbon already heating the world. The Climate Deadline Alliance is calling on leaders and the press to use the Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint as the starting point for the honest conversation COP30 is still not having.  

The Blueprint lays out a state-based path to build Direct Atmospheric Carbon Removal (DACR) facilities at scale, using existing technology and financing tools. It is designed so that governors and legislatures can move quickly, without waiting for slower or uncertain federal action.

Cutting emissions is essential, but it only slows how fast we move toward the cliff, said Dr. Christian Komor, founder of the Climate Deadline Alliance and architect of the Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint. There is already enough carbon in the air to threaten todays children in their lifetimes. We have to start pulling that carbon back out, or we will be managing permanent loss instead of real safety.

Emissions cuts alone cannot prevent crossing 450 ppm

Most current climate policy focuses on clean energy and emissions reduction. Those steps are necessary, but they do not remove the legacy carbon already in the atmosphere. On our current trajectory, scientists expect atmospheric CO2 to cross roughly 450 parts per million in the mid-2030s, a level associated with far more extreme heat, crop failures, fire, and flood.

Parents in every state are already asking what the world will look like when their kids are 20 or 30 years old, said Eric Sutton, Campaign Director for the Interstate Climate Deadline Alliance. If we know 450 ppm is on the way, and we know how to pull carbon out of the air, there is a clear moral responsibility to act.

DACR is ready to scale, and states can lead

Direct Atmospheric Carbon Removal uses proven chemical and mechanical processes to draw CO2 directly from ambient air, concentrate it, and either store it safely underground or turn it into usable materials. Pilot plants and commercial facilities already exist, and costs are falling as projects scale and learn.

The Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint shows how states can:

• Site and permit DACR facilities in suitable industrial and energy corridors.
• Use familiar economic development tools, such as tax incentives and public-private partnerships, to attract private investment.
• Link DACR deployment to workforce training, union jobs, and local supply chains.
• Ensure strong safeguards, monitoring, and public transparency.

Jobs, economic development, and a moral line in the sand

The SkyCarbon Blueprint is built around the idea that climate safety and economic development can move together. Captured CO2 can be transformed into fuels, biodegradable plastics, building materials, and public infrastructure. That creates long-term demand for skilled labor, engineering, and manufacturing.

This is a chance for Democratic leadership to draw a clear line in the sand, Sutton added. We can tell our children that we did more than pass targets on paper. We can show them real machines, real jobs, and real reductions in the carbon that is threatening their future.

 A friendly but firm call to the U.S. Climate Alliance

The Climate Deadline Alliance is asking the U.S. Climate Alliance and its member governors to expand their focus beyond emissions reduction and clean energy. Those efforts improve future survivability, but they do not address the carbon that is already heating the planet.

The Alliance is urging member states to:

• Review the Interstate SkyCarbon Blueprint with their climate, energy, and economic development staff.
• Convene internal working groups to assess potential DACR hubs and related industries.
• Meet with Climate Deadline Alliance representatives to explore near-term deployment options.
